A Sorta Fairytale

The envelope of cash was burning a hole in his pocket—fifteen grand, as promised and right on schedule. After all these years, Bear expected to be used to it. He’d made a deal with the devil and he had to honor the terms, right? But he still felt filthy, like he was covered in layers of dirt he would never be able to scrub off. He scowled, staring at his reflection in the storefront window. He had a beard, he hadn’t cut his hair in months. He was the same guy who’d pulled a hit in Venice last year, but nobody would know that, nobody would care, because nobody looked twice at this man who kept to the shadows and corners. This was his life. He finished a job, he picked up the money, and he prayed that each time was the last time. But it never was.

“All I ask for is seven years,” his father-in-law had said at the outset. Sitting behind that giant desk, playing the grieving parent, the doting grandparent, with the fires of hell burning in his eyes. “Seven years, and you’ll have everything you want.”

He’d been so off his head, half out of his mind, thinking, “I’ve already lost everything I want.” With his wife in the ground. The grave still fresh. Yes. Okay. Fuck you. I’ll do it. And he did it over and over again.

Sirens blared in the distance. The cops were about to find some poor sonofabitch dead in a no-tell motel on the outskirts of town. One of the devil’s enemies, dispatched as clean as you please. Bear never wanted details, never wanted to know exactly what had put the S.O.B. on the list. All he’d ever asked was one simple question: “Do they deserve it?” He was willing to accept the lie he got for an answer...because he had no other choice.

The sports car slowed to a crawl along the curb and Maricela fumbled with her keys, hurrying to unlock what she’d just taken great care to lock. “Hey, cupcake!” the driver catcalled, idling the engine. He had two buddies, shotgun and back seat, and the things they shouted weren’t nearly as polite. She recognized them from this morning when they’d come into the bakery. Three twentysomething white men she’d mentally nicknamed Dumb, Dumber, and Pendejo. In the daylight, they’d been harmless. Spoiled brats with nothing better to do than speculate on the cream filling in her eclairs. After sunset was a different story. They seemed bigger. Like they’d morphed somehow, as elongated and menacing as shadows on the sidewalk.

The car’s back door opened just as Mari got the locks undone, and she cursed. She’d only been open a week, and she couldn’t afford to let them wreck the place. Not to mention that the front room was small and narrow. If they followed her inside Sweet Temptations, she’d be trapped. So, she whirled to face them, keys gripped defensively, the teeth sticking out like brass knuckles. Dumb
